Someone has said that contemporary art has run out its cycle. Come what may, art will always offer a lot of occasions for experimentation lovers: the ones who create art and the ones who enjoy it. Young artists 108 (1978) and Elzo Durt (1980) are two shining examples of how art can endlessly redesign its limits. 108, alias Guido Bisagni, moved from traditional graffiti art to refined enigmatic shapes, becoming one of the most influential artists in graffiti abstract art. He also was the first writer to use numbers instead of letters for his name. Opposite, the works by graphic designer and musician Elzo Durt are a jumble of psychedelic rock and brilliant references to Flemish art.
Both of them, 108 and Elzo Durt, were the recent guests of a beautiful exhibition, Crossroad #1, hosted by the art gallery Doppelgaenger. We asked gallerist Antonella Spano and art collector Michele Spinelli to tell us something about art and their job.

GM — What is Doppelgaenger?
D — Doppelgaenger is a contemporary art gallery focused on research. It is open to projects dealing with the most varied fields of culture and has a speciality in publishing. Doppelgaenger is also a private house and a residence for artists.

GM — How do you choose artists who exhibit in your gallery?
D — The gallery manager also has the same responsibility of a guarantor. The gallery is the place of mediation between the voice of the artist and the world: art collector, museum etc… The choice is entirely personal. Every gallery manager has a vision of work in his mind and he knows exactly how to put into practice. We decided not to exclude collaboration. In such difficult times, it’s necessary that all actors in the system work together: gallery managers, artists, journalists etc… It’s interesting to share visions and to grow together and we think this is possible only with artists of our generation.

GM — Surprisingly, even in avant-gardeartistic expressions, there are many references to “modern” art (Arcimboldi, De Chirico, Pop Art, etc…). What’s behind this return? Is it a rediscovery or an escape from the present?
D — Present is a fact so it justifies itself. The artist lives the present designing the future. Doppelgaenger proceeds on a double trackresearch path. This duality of the project is focused on present figurative arts studies, but also onvideo art experimentations, from installation to performance.

GM — Are there any trends in the world of contemporary art?
D — In the art world, there are not trends but currents and, even unconsciously, artists take part in them. It may seem an insignificant difference but in fact it is not: trends imply an instinctive acceptance while currents originate from a consideration and from a cultural identity. Currents come and go, they may overlap to each otherand clash but they are always a sign of the present.
